Safety Considerations
The SWMC recognises that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. All participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement.
Many climbers and mountaineers will learn and improve their skills from other climbers as part of the normal process of gaining experience by starting with easy objectives and moving on to more difficult ones. This is an effective process and is the general philosophy adopted by the club.
Those individuals new to climbing should make their experience levels known to one of the more experienced members present on any club meeting prior to climbing. This will enable suitable supervision to be provided. The supervision you will receive is not from qualified instructors but from suitably experienced members of the club. The following points should be borne in mind.:
  • Be aware of the risks involved.
  • On arrival at the destination listen carefullly to instructions given, you will be given instruction into the use of any equipment prior to climbing if required.
  • Before you start climbing ensure all equipment, knots etc are checked by an experienced member, do not climb until instructed to do so.
  • If you believe there may be a problem or feel something is unsafe, check with an experienced member immediately.
